PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Diners loved his DownCity Diner when he opened it in 1990 with Anthony Salemme. They flocked to his Oak on Hope Street in 2004 when he offered neighborhood dining.

Now Paul Shire will be back in the kitchen at The Roi, set to open Dec. 19 at 150 Chestnut St. in Providence’s newly named “Knowledge District.”

The business (at the former site of the Century Lounge) will be an “intimate subterranean restaurant,” with five flat-screen televisions and a small stage for entertainment. There are 80 seats, plus 14 at the bar.

Shire describes the menu as affordable, with no dish more than the $23.95 for the filet mignon.
